Some people don't like mirrors because they think they don't look good. Others love mirrors because they like to see themselves reflected or as they imagine other see them. I liked the story. Still, there is much as yet unreflected.

This is really good. Very good descriptions, and what a comment on our self-absorbed world! I will follow this author's work -- he's very talented.

One effect of this may be that it inspires a new respect for reptiles. And that must be a good thing.

But on another note: I'm hardly inclined to read anymore riffs on how bad or important Tolkien was, if it doesn't also touch on the power of his language/narration and the melancholy tones in almost all of his writing. It's one of the reasons why he stands out. He really had a feeling for what he wrote (although I can accept criticisms that it's also based on primitive aspects). And that may be central in any good new direction. It's rather cheap how some think that more grittiness and complexity is all that it takes.

> Like most human beings (and unlike most of Tolkien’s characters, save perhaps Boromir, Faramir, and Denethor) ..

You mean almost all prominent Human characters in LOTR ?

Outstanding. Great style, I love the quirkiness of the characters and the way you describe the events and situations. Neat ending, downbeat, just as cool as the rest of it. Thanks, I really enjoyed this

It's also a reprint from Smoke and Mirrors, the Neil Gaiman short story collection I first read it in. A beautiful story that I quite liked. The "private religious discussion group" just freaks me out, though. Even back in those days....
I'm pretty sure Richard is a stand in for Gaiman himself, so he's not a real person

I think it would have been nice to have mentioned somewhere that the story here is a reprint from the pretty decent anthology Tales of the White Wolf. That is the norm, is it not?
