Quite nice. But I'd much rather read work on this site from up and coming authors, what with the space being at a premium and the newbs being in a position to actually benefit from the exposure. I very much doubt Neil Gaiman needs the publication or cares that it's up here.

I have sent over a dozen emails and received no answer. So is this place in operation or what...?

Thanks.

DEAR HELIOTROPIAN POWERS,

RE: BIRD DOGS

THIS SHORT STORY IS FROM MY (UNPUBLISHED) BOOK OF STORIES
TITLED: 'SCREW THE MOON & OTHER STORIES'

THE STORY IS BASED, IN PART, ON AN ARTICLE I READ WAY BACK WHEN IN NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ABOUT THE FUTURE OF ROBOTICS
TECHNOLOGY IN THE MILITARY.

I HOPE IT MEETS HELIOTROPE'S STANDARDS.

THANKS SO MUCH,
DOUG

What a remarkable article. It fails so resoundingly to say anything genuinely original or insightful that one suspects it exists for the sole purpose of slipping in that plug for the author's own work in the penultimate paragraph.

Turin, was pretty much Tolkien's take on Elric, the basis of both characters(and their fundamental stories) inspired by the character Kullervo from the Finnish epic Kalevala.

Some people don't like mirrors because they think they don't look good. Others love mirrors because they like to see themselves reflected or as they imagine other see them. I liked the story. Still, there is much as yet unreflected.

This is really good. Very good descriptions, and what a comment on our self-absorbed world! I will follow this author's work -- he's very talented.

One effect of this may be that it inspires a new respect for reptiles. And that must be a good thing.

But on another note: I'm hardly inclined to read anymore riffs on how bad or important Tolkien was, if it doesn't also touch on the power of his language/narration and the melancholy tones in almost all of his writing. It's one of the reasons why he stands out. He really had a feeling for what he wrote (although I can accept criticisms that it's also based on primitive aspects). And that may be central in any good new direction. It's rather cheap how some think that more grittiness and complexity is all that it takes.
